The return raises and lowers, so you can stand to work without leaving your desk. The main surface stays fixed and substantial — the solid hardwood presence a private office is supposed to have. You get the sit-stand benefit right where you use a laptop or a second monitor, and the desk still looks like a desk, not a mechanism.
